The Barcolana and that sea of values that unites us

It is difficult to choose a day, an event, a meeting, that encapsulates the essence of such an intense journey, so full of satisfaction and challenges as my experience at Generali.

Even after so many years of work, in different sectors and different companies, always in contact with shareholders and colleagues, Generali continues to show me new facets of what seems to me every day to be an extraordinary entrepreneurial, human and emotional activity. I have had the good fortune and the opportunity to often find this reflection of myself in the eyes and commitment of those who live it from the inside, and also of those who, living it from the outside, have decided to share a part of it and make it a small, often intimate part of their daily reality.

There is, however, one event that I recall with particular emotion because it seems to me to represent all of this: our presence, the presence of Generali, at the Barcolana, a partnership that has lasted for over 40 years and which has seen the historic sailing regatta held every year in the Gulf of Trieste grow into an international competition.

When I attended this event for the first time in October 2011 as Generali's Chairman, I understood what Generali represents to people and why it is so popular.

I remember life in Trieste on the eve of the start: everyone, everyone was there with their hearts in it! Everyone, with mind and arms, committed to the organisation of the event as if it were their own personal race, the reason for working all year, the sporting ambition, but also the pride of taking part, knowing how difficult the victory will be.

On the start line and during the race, I saw the look on the faces of the crews and I was struck by the sight of even the smallest boats: happy expressions of being in touch with nature, families engaged in a cheerful challenge with neighbouring boats, teams stretched out to win, all careful to respect the rules. Here, all this seemed so close to Generali's DNA. One with our deepest values, with closeness to the community, with rootedness in the territory, with active participation in the society in which we live and work.

And what to say about the applause reserved for the arrival of the winner and the joy of seeing the city and the sea merge in an embrace that contains all the history we share with this land. 190 years ago, brave men sailed the oceans in ships much more fragile and less sophisticated than ours, in search of fortune, to bring wealth to their families and to promote the progress of societies, and other men thought of protecting their lives and their jobs by creating what was then one of the most advanced insurance systems on the continent.

From the deck of the boat on which I was standing, one of the first among many, the sight of more than two thousand sails, all bearing the Generali brand, gave me an extraordinary feeling of pride, courage, solidity and security. With us at that moment was the example of men and women who, through their hard work, far from the limelight, in almost two centuries have built a great insurance company, today one of the most important in the world, protecting the lives of individuals, families, businesses, their assets and... their dreams.

La Barcolana e quel mare di valori che ci unisce

Difficile scegliere un giorno, un evento, un incontro, che racchiuda l’essenza di un percorso così intenso, così ricco di soddisfazioni e di sfide come la mia esperienza in Generali.

Anche dopo tanti anni di lavoro, in settori diversi e aziende diverse, sempre a contatto con azionisti e colleghi, Generali continua a mostrarmi nuove sfaccettature di quella che, ogni giorno, mi sembra essere un’attività imprenditoriale, umana ed emotiva straordinaria. Ho avuto la fortuna, e le occasioni, di ritrovare spesso questa mia riflessione negli sguardi e nell’impegno di chi la vive dall’interno, e anche di chi, vivendola dal di fuori, ha deciso di condividerne una parte e trasformarla in una piccola fetta, spesso intima, della propria realtà quotidiana.

C’è però un evento, a cui penso con particolare emozione, perché mi sembra rappresentare bene tutto questo: è la nostra presenza, la presenza di Generali, alla Barcolana, una collaborazione che dura da più di 40 anni e che ha visto crescere la storica regata velica che si tiene ogni anno nel Golfo di Trieste in una competizione di livello internazionale.

Quando la prima volta ho partecipato come presidente delle Generali a questo evento, nell’ottobre del 2011, ho capito cosa rappresentassero le Generali per le persone, e perché fossero così amate.

Ricordo la vita di Trieste alla vigilia della partenza: tutti, tutti partecipano con il cuore! Ognuno, con lo spirito e con le braccia, impegnato ad organizzare la manifestazione come se si trattasse di una propria gara personale, il motivo per cui si è lavorato tutto l’anno, l’ambizione sportiva ma anche la fierezza di partecipare, pur sapendo quanto la vittoria sarà difficile.

Sulla linea di partenza e durante il percorso in mare ho incontrato lo sguardo degli equipaggi, e mi ha colpito l’osservare proprio le barche più piccole: espressioni felici per l’esser a contatto con la natura, famiglie impegnate in un’allegra sfida con le barche vicine, squadre protese a cercare la vittoria, tutti attenti a rispettare le regole. Ecco tutto questo mi è apparso così vicino al DNA di Generali. Un tutt’uno con i nostri valori più profondi, con la vicinanza alla comunità, col radicamento sul territorio, con la partecipazione attiva nella società in cui viviamo e operiamo.

E cosa dire degli applausi riservati all’arrivo del vincitore, e della felicità di vedere la città e il mare fondersi in un abbraccio che contiene tutta la storia che condividiamo con questa terra. 190 anni fa uomini coraggiosi solcavano gli oceani con velieri ben più fragili dei nostri e non molto sofisticati, in cerca di fortuna, per portare benessere alle loro famiglie e alimentare il progresso delle società, ed altri uomini pensavano a proteggere le loro vite e il loro lavoro costruendo un sistema assicurativo all’epoca tra i più avanzati nel Continente.

Dalla tolda dell’imbarcazione sulla quale mi trovavo, tra le prime in mezzo a tante, la vista delle duemila e più vele, tutte con il marchio delle Generali, mi diede una sensazione straordinaria di orgoglio, di coraggio, di solidità, di sicurezza. In quel momento era con noi l’esempio di uomini e donne che, con il loro lavoro assiduo e lontano dalle luci della ribalta, hanno costruito in quasi due secoli una grande Compagnia di Assicurazioni, oggi tra le più importanti al mondo, proteggendo vite di persone, di famiglie, imprese, i loro beni e… i loro sogni.
