Generali was founded in Trieste in 1831 and has deep roots and ties with the city. A relationship enriched today by the conferral of the honorary citizenship of Trieste to Gabriele Galateri di Genola, who was the Company's Chairman for 11 years.
During a ceremony held in the hall of the Trieste Municipal Council that was attended by local authorities, the Chairman Andrea Sironi, and the Company's top management, Mayor Roberto Dipiazza explained the reasons for the conferral, which was unanimously approved by the Council, "as a sign of gratitude and appreciation, on behalf of the entire city community, for the undoubted management qualities demonstrated at the helm of Generali. Generali Group is one of the historic insurance companies born in Trieste that are now internationally renowned and have carried high the name of our city throughout the world."

In his speech to the city authorities, Galateri highlighted the importance of Trieste as a city that is being projected towards the future due to its geographical location, its history, and inclusiveness. He also pointed out its relevance as a hub of scientific research and innovation, thanks, among other things, to Generali's contribution to the creation of the Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Institute: the initiative that draws on Trieste's DNA and the region's academic excellence to generate research and new business opportunities based on data science and artificial intelligence.

In the Salotto Azzurro of the City Hall, Gabriele Galateri di Genola also left a message in the Golden Book of the Trieste Municipality: "I am proud to become a citizen of a city whose history has taught courage, inclusiveness, and the spirit of entrepreneurship from which companies such as Generali, which today is a leader in the global insurance industry, were born."
