Shaping Change, Toward a Possible Future
In the whirlwind of change, we are called upon to face profound and often unexpected transformations. From geopolitical shocks to the accelerated evolution of new technologies and artificial intelligence, to social, demographic, and climate challenges. Being an active part of change will be necessary to redefine our collective future
Over the past five years, in a constantly evolving world, we’ve repeatedly felt as though we were facing particularly unexpected and disruptive events. In this sense, the Covid-19 pandemic marked a first break with the past, while the dramatic conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, along with the policies on tariffs and the relations with Europe and the main world powers of the current U.S. administration, are just some of the major factors that have significantly altered the geopolitical landscape.
To this, we must add the major long-term structural trends of our time: climate change and increasingly frequent extreme natural events, the growing impact of artificial intelligence, and an ageing population in the most advanced economies. These phenomena raise crucial questions and fuel uncertainties that affect every aspect of society.
Inevitably, all these ongoing transformations also influence the work and the purpose of large international private organizations. This is especially true for a leader in insurance and asset management like Generali, which has always strived to help people build a safer and more sustainable future for themselves, their loved ones, and their businesses. The insurance industry is deeply linked to the evolution of society and the world, and it is precisely in times of greatest uncertainty that companies must prove their ability to meet customer needs.
Since its foundation in 1831, our Group has lived through nearly two centuries of history, facing wars, deep economic and social crises, political changes, and unforeseen events. In this sense, our longevity is the most authentic testimony to our great adaptability to any context and to the added value brought to millions of people, families, and businesses who have trusted - and continue to trust - us.
These qualities are deeply rooted in our DNA and represent a key asset to respond with confidence and awareness to today’s challenges as well. But above all, we face these new horizons from a position of great strength, as demonstrated by the success of our last three consecutive strategic plans. These achievements, made possible by the hard work and dedication of everyone in the Group, have allowed us to build solid foundations. Now, through our new strategic plan, “Lifetime Partner 27: Driving Excellence”, launched at the beginning of the year, we are ready to pursue excellence in everything we do.
This is an ambitious and comprehensive strategy. Between now and the end of 2027, when the plan will reach its conclusion, we will further improve the quality of the relationship with our customers and the experience we offer them, while strengthening our operating model and core competencies, further enhancing the synergy between our insurance leadership and our global Asset Management platform.
We will achieve all this thanks to three strategic foundations: our people, by promoting an environment that encourages continuous skills development and a culture based on excellence, meritocracy, and diversity; artificial intelligence and data, by continuing to make significant investments to seize all opportunities arising from these technologies; and, finally, sustainability.
We strongly believe that our role goes beyond business and that a major group like ours has a duty to actively contribute from a social and environmental standpoint. That is why we continue to implement our sustainability strategy with determination, as a responsible investor, insurer, employer, and corporate citizen.
We do this by working together with public institutions, universities, and other private entities on broad-reaching topics such as decarbonization or climate resilience, sharing our experience and technical expertise.
Furthermore, through The Human Safety Net, the foundation that Generali launched in 2017, which is currently active in 25 countries, we extend our mission to the most vulnerable people in our society, so as to help them unleash their full potential. With its programmes supporting fragile families with young children and promoting the inclusion of refugees through work and entrepreneurship, The Human Safety Net has already reached over 800,000 beneficiaries – also thanks to the valuable contributions of many volunteer colleagues around the world.
With the awareness gained from experience, the confidence coming from the important results we achieved, and guided by a clear strategic vision, we look to the new horizons of this historical phase with the conviction that, even with uncertainties and risks, there are significant opportunities to shape a safer and more sustainable collective future. And, as we have done for nearly 200 years, we are ready to play our part to make it happen.
