Sustainability wins the future
It has been almost two years since our strategy Lifetime Partner 24: Driving Growth, was introduced, and since we have started implementing it in our projects and day-to-day work in Slovenia. Today I can proudly say that we have bravely stepped onto the path of sustainable transformation and that we can already see the results of our work. We have successfully conducted several projects and gained also important sustainability award Greenstar. All these is proving to us that our efforts are heading in the right direction.
The credit for translating the strategy into daily operations and projects goes to all our employees, and we are proud of the progress we have achieved in Slovenia.
In our company, we strive to be responsible insurer, investor, employer, and corporate citizen. Following these principles, our sustainable projects span on several areas all aiming to support our purpose. In the following lines, I would like to present some of our socially responsible projects which make us proud and contribute to our society.
Innovations and technologies play an important role in our lives, their significance is rising along with our knowledge and skills of utilizing them. In our industry, advanced technologies - such as data analytics and artificial intelligence improve insurance processes, support us with new product development, analyse user experiences, etc. But what may be an advantage for some can be a hindrance for others.
In the context of leveraging technological advantages for better, more included, and connected living, we have recognized the challenges that elderly people are facing. Particularly those who have limited exposure to digital tools and reside in areas outside major urban centers where digital skills education is less accessible.
Pursuing to address this challenge, we are launching in these days a new sustainable initiative in Slovenia "Digitalno samostojni" (Digitally Independent). The project aims to empower senior citizens with key digital skills which are necessary for everyday life. The computer and/or smartphone usage courses will initially take place in three municipalities with the highest proportion of the elderly population and a high aging index in Slovenia. In spring 2024, the courses will be expanded to several other Slovenian municipalities, bringing technology in knowledge on how to use it, closer to the people in need.
As being an active member in our society, we are supporting projects that importantly contribute to the health, quality of life and safety.
Under our umbrella platform “Razpiramo krila levjesrčnim” (Expanding Wings for the Lionhearted), we support sport clubs and associations – from those who enable small children to take their first steps in sport all the way to those on highest national level. Our aim is also to enable sport to children from vulnerable families – cooperation with Goran Dragić Foundation is one small step in this direction. Basketball is widely popular among children in Slovenia - also due to the great success of our national basketball team and very successful individuals who made their names in NBA.
Each summer we cooperate with Slovenian NBA basketball player Goran Dragić and his foundation, which runs a reputable Basketball Camp which brings together young talents from 7 countries. Generali every year enables the participation in the camp the children from deprived families, who love basketball. Camp provides not only a unique basketball experience but also brings children closer to their sportive dreams.
During the last holiday season, we launched an initiative Colour your Memories for raising awareness on Dementia. Dementia is, more than we are aware of, present among elderly people in Slovenia. Apart from building awareness about the disease our goal was also to educate about prevention and lay out a simple tool that helps the elderly retain the cognitive abilities. It was warmly accepted - not only among family members of people with Dementia but also wider among people with older relatives. The project gained also extensive media coverage and was shared on social media. All these importantly contributed to our goal on building awareness about this silent disease.
We also pay great attention to prevention and education. Among the most visible and well-recognized projects were our 3-D Pedestrian Crossings. The focus of the project was to increase traffic safety in areas in the vicinity of schools and kindergartens, where traffic is supposed to run slower (30 km/h).
During this 2-year project, we introduced more 3D- Pedestrian Crossings in 15 Municipalities, throughout Slovenia. The locations for crossings were voted by people and municipalities, focusing on areas where traffic safety was insufficient. Concurrently with new crossroads, we have conducted also courses on traffic safety for young children in schools and kindergartens.
Among the sustainable projects briefly presented above, we focused mainly on those that confirmed us as Responsible Corporate Citizen. But this does not mean that we are not active in other areas that lead us to a more sustainable company and society.
I strongly believe that contribution toward a more resilient and responsible society lies on the shoulders of all of us – companies and individuals. It is also my personal commitment, which I try to incorporate into my daily life and encourage my family and those around me, to embrace sustainable practices. That is also why I look forward to a new platform Responsible Future and all the changes that we can achieve together for today and for future generations.
