Responsible Centenary
It was the first foreign insurance company in our country and has a great sense of social responsibility regarding the environment and the market in which it operates.
Therefore, after the worst part of the Covid 19 pandemic and understanding how digitization and innovation could help us, we negotiated with companies to digitize our physical document collection. The reduction of paper and ease of searching for documents and data were impactful for the company, however, the most impactful thing was not just that.
From this time we have already purged more than 3,000 boxes of files weighing 20kg each and our idea is to finish with everything possible, I say possible due to mandatory situations of physical storage of some documents in our country, until 2025, the centenary year of Generali Brasil.
This number of boxes already purged, counting a 25% decrease in their total weight (not every box will be at its maximum load), weighs around 46t of paper. All this paper was recycled in a way that respects GDPR law and the environment. But in the act of acquiring and using this paper, we considered that we had a small carbon footprint on our part and we did not want to believe that recycling would be enough to return our footprint and impact.
Considering that the 3,000 boxes weigh a total of 46t of paper, we did the calculations and pointed out that during this period we have already emitted approximately 14.5t of CO2 into the atmosphere with paper alone.
To neutralize this footprint, discarding the recycling already made, we are organizing the planting of native trees for the company's 99th anniversary. According to our calculations, with 14.5t of CO2 we would need to plant approximately 100 trees.
We are hiring a partner company to plant the 99 units for Generali Brasil's 99th anniversary and after 1 year we will return to plant the hundredth, thus celebrating our centenary and responsibility. For each tree, a collaborator, preferably those with more experience at the company, would be appointed for planting and experience a day of immersion in social and sustainability issues. These trees will be planted in a region that lacks planting to mitigate landslides and preserve a region with a population that needs this assistance. The last one, the 100-year one, will be the responsibility of our oldest employee working at the company.
However, the carbon credit market in Brazil is still undergoing approvals to become something regulated in our country and for this reason we would still not be able to generate voluntary carbon credits with this project. But it is nothing that we cannot request in the future with the conclusion of legal regulation.
