Environment

Protecting the environment as a primary asset is one of the Generali Group’s guiding values. As defined in its Ethical Code, the Group has made a commitment to direct its own decisions towards ensuring compatibility between economic and environmental factors.

The Environmental Policy of the Generali Group has been defined and approved in 2009.
It confirms the Group is committed to safeguarding the environment, as stated in its Ethical Code.

The definition and standardization of the Environmental Policy are the first steps of the international project launched in early 2009 and aimed at implementing a Group Environmental Management System (EMS). This system allows to efficiently manage environmental aspects.

The System is supported by an organisational structure that is composed of a Sustainability Committee and a Committee for the Environmental Management System (EMS Committee).
The Sustainability Committee comprises of Group managers from the corporate departments that are most involved in implementing social and environmental policies and CSR Officers from all the countries/areas where the Group has operations. It is a decision-making body which defines, evaluates and reviews the Group environmental policies, objectives and targets.
The EMS Committee is an operative body consisting of the Group EMS Representative and Country EMS Representatives. It is responsible for disseminating and attaining the objectives contained in the Environmental Policy, evaluates the EMS’ services according to the terms defined in the Group objectives and targets for environmental improvement document, and, in the event of a failure to attain them, proposes potential intervention actions.

The task of coordinating the Committees and drafting documentation for the System at the Group level is carried out by the Corporate Social Responsibility unit.
Each country also has a Country CSR Committee, which are operative bodies that coordinate the activities of disseminating and adopting Environmental Policy, approve the Country Environmental Programme, and evaluate the suitability of the actions proposed by the individual companies with the policies, objectives and goals of the country.

Furthermore, in certain countries, there are national support structures for the Country CSR Committees which have solely environmental powers.
